Bionics Institute

WHO WE ARE

The Bionics Institute is an independent medical research institute and registered charity which undertakes innovative research into areas of clinical need to develop medical devices and technologies which can transform people’s lives.

WHAT WE DO

The Institute consists of researchers, engineers and technicians working closely with clinicians to pioneer new technologies that address the unmet needs of people living with conditions including hearing loss, tinnitus, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, stroke, vision impairment, Crohn’s disease, and urinary incontinence. Medical bionics is an area where biology, medicine and engineering intersect. Scientists understand the physiology of how nerves respond to electrical stimulation, which forms the basis of bionic technologies. Our scientists work together with mechanical engineers, electrical engineers and biomedical engineers to develop safe and effective designs for bionic devices. Clinicians advise and collaborate with them at every step of the process.

OUR OUTCOMES

The delivery of innovative devices and/or technologies to improve patient outcomes is the main way we can demonstrate the difference we make. These outcomes include the development of the cochlear implant over several decades; development of the bionic eye which is currently in clinical trials; development of prototype devices for long-term monitoring of seizures in epilepsy patients; a novel system for the identification of hitherto undiagnosed hearing disorders in babies, and a unique abdomen-implanted electrical stimulation device for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

LEAVING A GIFT TO THE BIONICS INSTITUTE IN YOUR WILL

Remembering the Bionics Institute in your will is a practical way of making a difference in people’s lives. All gifts contribute to our important biomedical research and will help support research projects, laboratory equipment purchases, research fellowships and student scholarships. PLEASE LET US KNOW

If you have included the Bionics Institute in your will, we would love to hear from you. We would like to keep you updated on our progress, and invite you to our supporter events.
